From the author of the bestselling SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (released as a film starring Ewan McGregor), a tale of the unexpected...Bobby Clarke arrives at a hotel on the Mediterranean shore. He is a former MP, unseated by the expenses scandal, who is now spending time abroad to recover from a major illness. The other purpose of his stay is to write his memoirs in order to demonstrate that he was unfairly pilloried for 'a minor accounting error', having valiantly served his country for 30 years. He settles into his new surroundings but soon it becomes clear that all is not as it seems. For a start Bobby seems to have no memory of the immediate past. Each time he sits down to continue his memoirs he finds only a blank page. Every morning as he comes downstairs the same scene replays itself in front of him: a young woman and her son pass him on the stairs. And what has become of his wife?… (más)

He knew that for the last thirty years he had presented himself as an honest man when he had been nothing of the sort. He knew that, if he told nobody else the truth, he had at least to be honest with himself, as far as he was able. He knew that there had been a choice. And he thought that his life could have turned out quite differently, if he had chosen differently. He knew that guilt had been corroding him for years, and that underneath his smooth outer surface there was very little of the original Bobby Wansbeck left.

A former politician who fell from grace due to the expenses scandal and then suffered some serious health problems, arrives at an unspoiled mediterranean hotel for a few weeks of relaxation. He mulls over the past and makes several attempts to start writing his memoirs, starting from a different angle each time, and keeps seeing the same mother and child on his way down to breakfast. It didn't take me long to realise what is really going on in this novella. Breakfast, what breakfast? ( )

An enjoyable novella about Robert "Bobby" Wansbeck, former Conservative MP for a constituency in the north of England who, in a bid to get away from it all for a little while, checks into an old fashioned hotel, presumably near the coast of France.
It emerges that he has recently undergone significant surgery, as a consequence of which he is very weary. Relaxing in his hotel room he decides to make preparations for his memoirs, detailing his life as an MP. As the story progresses we find out more about Wansbeck who, it transpires, was one of the MPs shamed by the Daily Telgraph's expose of expenses claim malfeasance.
Torday handles this quirky story adeptly, keeping the reader's attention by switching between episodes from Wansbeck's past and his experiences in the hotel where he seems to be caught in some sort of time warp. ( )
