I plan to read it before the year ends, but I keep on falling asleep.
Right now, I have a nagging headache trying to finish it.
The only Russian I know, who used to be a nice friend, recommended this.

For real, though. I had the stupidest cold that made me feel disgusting, and I was hopped up on cold medicine this entire week. I feel like I've been reading this book forever. As I read, I kept making comparisons to Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho. And while I ultimately believe the books are ideologically different, there's an intense psychological examination of murder and relationship to guilt and crime that bears examining. I think I would say that Ellis inverts Dostoevsky in the end with Patrick Bateman, but that's a commentary on both the 19th and 20th centuries, perhaps? Crime and Punishment is ultimately a fascinating philosophical study in big societal questions and phenomena.

As far as plot/story are concerned, though, I much prefer The Brothers Karamazov. Crime and Punishment is less developed for character, and it's a bit emotionally overwrought in parts. ( )

Un libro de Dostoyevsky que no solo habla de los grandes problemas humanos como acostumbra pero que ademas tiene trama y que te mantiene en vilo (por la mayor parte).

El libro sigue principalmente los pensamientos del protagonista y sus cambios de humor. En ese sentido es muy psicologico y muy Dostoyevsky. Pero hay un asesinato y una investigacion criminal que forman la trama principal. ( )

So, it has been a while and I wasn't sure about my thoughts so I put off reviewing it. I was so excited to read this, and I was scared too because I, in general, am terrified of bigger books and was going to be reading one after a long time plus I was worried that Dostoyevsky's writing style might be difficult to understand or I might find the book boring.

I was wrong. It was engaging right from the beginning. I loved the writing and the pace of the book. I liked feeling that I'm inside Raskolnikov's mind. I could feel his anxieties, his fears, his isolation. It raised important questions about morality, evil, and highlighted how subjective it is. I loved the use of Razumikhin to contrast Raskolnikov and show how important our choices are to determine the kind of life we end up leading.

There is so much more I can say about this book but I have never been good at penning down my thoughts so in short, I'd say I loved it. ( )
