In the little coastal town of Shadcombe an inquest is taking place. The body of a young woman has been discovered strangled in her bedroom. The weapon used is a piece of tarred twine,knotted in a curious way three times !
Shortly after the inquest her boy-friend is arrested for the murder,but is soon freed due to lack of evidence. He decides to engage a firm of detectives run by Irene Baxter to discover the real killer. Baxter has has good results in the past and is an expert of disguise and uses this skill to great effect in her investigations. In the course of the story she disguises herself as a fat cook and a slim gentleman.It is somewhat unfortunate that she soon falls in love with her client and this tends to muddy the waters somewhat.
This is Le Queux in great form with some good set pieces and several suitably mysterious villains. ( )
