Author served in the WAVES during World War II and retired as a LCDR in the Navy Reserve. Her job involved the administration of the Navy Seabee Construction Engineering Program; she reported directly to the Chief of Naval Operations. After leaving the Navy Mary attended law school and studied fine arts, eventually working as an editor and teacher. The book provides prospective enlistees with brief histories of each service, the requirements for enlistment, and lists the various career opportunities available. Within the chapter on the Army she describes West Point, ROTC, Army Junior ROTC, Army Language School, and lists colleges with ROTC programs and career fields, requirements, and preparation for civilian jobs. The chapters on the Navy, Marines and Air Force follow a similar pattern.
