This is among a number of stories written during the 1920's-1930's where standards have changed so much that the reader of today will wonder what the fuss is all about. A young girl and her mother have been left in a poor,but not quite destitute position by an absent husband. This man is discovered to be a criminal hunted by the police. In a series of steps the daughter pulls herself up,firstly by taking the position of nursemaid. She then has a platonic affair with the son of the owner of a store. She has a short spell on the stage and finally meets and falls in love with a nobleman. All seems to be going well and happiness assured when shadows from her past cloud the issue. Blackmail and murder raise their heads and her whole life changes overnight.
To get full enjoyment of the story one must try to forget the mores of the present day and put oneself into the thinking prevailing at the time. ( )
