This book is a wonderful way to introduce the story of Hanukkah to a class in which you may not have many Jewish children. It is illustrated well, and told in a simple enough manner that many levels of children will understand the concept. Perfect teaching tool! ( )

In my opinion, “A Family Hanukkah” is a fabulous story for children for three main reasons: the writing, the plot, and the illustrations. This book is an educational multicultural book that teaches children about the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah. The plot tells of two young children during their Hanukkah celebration with their parents and grandparents. They start to prepare for the first day of Hanukkah by making presents for their family members. Then they get together with their family, and they ask, “Why do we celebrate Hanukkah?” The grandpa tells them that he will explain why they celebrate Hanukkah. The writing within the grandfather’s story flows very well. The grandfather talks about the Syrian army and then transitions to talking about the Maccabees. The gorgeously painted illustrations portray the grandpa telling his story to the whole family. The illustrations also show the historical story of the Hanukkah holiday. The big idea is to teach children the importance of Hanukkah and to show children how people typically celebrate the holiday. ( )

This book demonstrates how Hanukkah is celebrated and the meaning behind it. This would be a great story to share with students that may want to know what Hanukkah is and why it is so important to those who celebrate it. ( )

NO OF PAGES: 31 SUB CAT I: Children's Resources SUB CAT II: Feasts/Festivals SUB CAT III: DESCRIPTION: The most joyful holiday on the Jewish calendar is Hanukkah. Hanukkah means eight days of candles, songs, games, presents, and fun! Sharing Hanukkah with the whole family is what really makes it special. Rachel and Jonathan are going to their grandparents' house to light the first candle. So are their aunts, uncles, and cousins. Won't you come along too?NOTES: SUBTITLE:
