The story was a slow, steady burn, like watching the sunset from a weathered wooden porch swing while listening to an old vinyl of a Rachmaninov symphony playing in slow crescendo. Jones’ words are magnetic. Clear. Constructive. Evocative. Not complicated but driving, compelling. It’s a story of a single hot day on a farm in coastal Wales, and the inner life of a long married couple and their two children. It’s the rise and fall of the sun and the animal life they care for on their land as a mirror of their relationship, and the suffering and satisfaction born from that effort. Their married relationship reminded me of this lyric by Neil & Tim Finn, from their brilliant song “A Life Between Us”… “And we're staring at Each other Like the banks of A river And we can't get Any closer But we form a life Between us” Like Cormac McCarthy’s work, Jones has given us gritty, real characters born of the land they farm. But Jones does so more lucidly, and with more power because his cast is more relatable. He delivers multiple moments of keen insight on our shared human sufferings and triumphs. The book stirred me, sitting with me long after I finished reading. An author’s ability to say so much so simply is a gift. Jones is a real talent. I found his books while looking for pastoral memoirs of life in rural England. I’ll be cracking into more of his works soon. This novella or short novel packs a significant punch. It begins as what I would describe as a "quiet" novel, which I love, but then opens the reader up to much passion, frustration and anger. Is it a day in the life of a farmer and his and his family's relationship to the land? Is it about the pain and anger in the relations of a married couple: how they live with the past, how will they move forward, will they survive the future? Is it about how one individual's insecurities or how the changes life brings can alter the love in a relationship? There is much more here, and that was my only problem with the book. It felt like so much was addressed in such a small space. Not only did I want more from the author because I enjoyed what I got, which is a good thing, but in this case I felt the content deserved more space and more exploration.

Jones beats the reader over the head with Death. Of a calf, cows, parent, rabbit, dog, child. Of romantic desire, intimacy, the ideal self. At the last he tries to make up for it, fresh rain and rekindled vision. Nope, I'm not having it. An unhappy sketch of life, well written, particularly a scene of two brothers and a dying rabbit. ( )
