It all began with the beets. The revoltingly red beets that drove Edgar, Allan, and Poe to do the horrendously horrible thing that they did. Their mother has one unbreakable rule: "No dessert until you finish your dinner." But how can Edgar, Allan, and Poe possibly clear their plates when there are Brussels sprouts to be swallowed, liver to be chewed, and worst of all, beets to be bitten? There must be a way to get rid of dinner, without having to gobble up this foul food. Perhaps the loose floorboard under Poe's chair is the answer! But just as the parade of delicious desserts begins, the hidden food starts to grow and starts to smell and it's going to blow their cover.… (más)

Edgar, Allan, And Poe and the Tell-Tale Beets by Natalie Rompella is a humorous retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's the Tell-Tale Heart. In the story the three boys, Edgar, Allan and Poe are served disgusting food by their mother that they must eat if they wish to have dessert. The boys discover a lose floorboard under their chairs that they then use to hid the food they don't like under in order to get dessert. Eventually the floorboard becomes so full of disgusting food that a smell begins to emerge, and the boys can hear the sounds of their foods coming from underneath. Eventually the smell and the sounds drive the boys crazy and they confess what they have been doing to their mother. This is a humorous story that helps to teach kids that you should always eat your supper, while introducing them to the classic works of literature. ( )
