Not one of my favorite's of this author, still worth reading. This is intended for a younger audience than her other books. Outlining noises made by various animals, this ends with the sound of "shhh, shhh, shhh" made by a mother to her child. ( )

I have to say, I was expecting this Polacco book to be another long book, to my surprise it was something completely different. I’m still not sure if I liked it or not. It’s a great book to teach students about the sounds animals make. I liked how she incorporated multiple times that “bunnies say nothing at all.” I feel like kids will chime in and finish that sentence. I love how they added the mother at the end and the sound she makes (even though it’s the title of the book- so it’s to be expected). ( )

This book was obviously written for a much younger audience than Mr. Falker. "Mommies Day Shhh!" has no storyline or plot, but tells a lot in its illustrations. The book goes through different animal sounds, finally reaching mommies, who say "Shhh!" to all the noise around them. With each page, it shows the animal whose sound is being referred to and a child/ children watching it caring for them. It seems peaceful, at first, but looking closer at the background you'll see that there's some form of chaos going on. Farmers chasing animals, children arguing, and dogs chasing chickens are all things you'll see going on in the background. When we finally see the mother, we see she's holding a sleeping child, and we see why she's telling everyone to be quiet. We also see that she's surrounded by rabbits, which the narrator points out again and again they don't say anything at all. This is such a cute story, I will definitely read it to my kids one day.
