"A Winter Spy" was a bit of a fun read for me, an entertainment - I rated it 4 stars. It was written by Don Winslow in 1991 under a pseudonym, and the story takes place for the most part in December 1958, Two main threads are hero Walter Withers, as an employess of Forbes and Forbes security company is assigned bodyguard duties for Mrs. Madeleine Kenneally (Jacqueline Kennedy); Withers is a former (or is he active?) agent of the CIA, and he is lover of Anne, a nightclub jazz singer with some shady dealings and relationships in her past. JFK and RFK of course play big roles, and they take their lumps. Not as much as Jedgar Hoover, but clearly author MacDonald Lloyd is not a fan. There are some 30 pages devoted to the 1958 sudden death football game between the Giants and the Colts with WW outsmarting JFK on a wager that escalates over the course of the game. And, Marilyn Monroe is there, too. Kinda. There's a blonde femme fatale, but Scandanavian - poor thing she is a suicide as well as ex lover of the JFK character, ex by a few hours - and there's a mysterious needle mark between two of her toes, but it's ruled a suicide anyway. I think the spy story is resolved and I can't remember if Walter and Anne patch things up, but no matter.....Not for those who look back on the early 60's and still see Camelot.
