"Everyone in the Olina family, living and dead, knows that Magel keeps human body parts in her freezer."From the beginning of the novel, the provocative story defies the Minnesota-nice stereotype while inhabiting the territory of Fargo, the movie and mini-series, in all its darkly humorous humor glory. Magel's Daughter highlights the deadly manipulation of matriarchal power within a Norwegian family in northern Minnesota, a chilly world of hallucination, incest, and severed heads. It is wickedly humorous with a touch of magical realism. On the surface, it is an episodic blitz through the last days of Karin Brix's sanity. By the end, Karin has lost it, and it's all her mother's fault. Magel is a classic femme fatale who has grown old and spoiled everyone's lives just like her mother, and her mother's mother. Magel is the reigning matriarch, and Karin is on her way to becoming just like her, though struggling to reclaim herself as an artist after years of raising two sons in an unsatisfying marriage. Karin is assisted in her endeavors by lively hallucinations of her ancestors. And during Karin's struggles, her father's glass eye weaves through her imagination as the only sound counsel amid the chaos. This is a work of unbridled inventiveness and rare insight that takes the reader on an unexpected joy ride through uncharted waters. Buckle up! And prepare to be astonished.… (más)

I was not impressed with Magel's Daughter. I think it was mainly because a lot of the characters were simply unlikable and unrelatable. Dysfunctional families I can understand on some level, but when the kids seem to have more common sense than adults at a very young age, I start to wonder exactly what point of family dynamics Baker was trying to make. It is touted as a dark comedy, but I found nothing funny about a mother's selfishness, a husband's abusiveness, accepted(?)incest, and mental breakdowns. It's hardly a lesson in psychologically damaged persons because no one seems to know how broken they really are and seem to surround themselves with people they can blame and point fingers at without taking that good hard look at themselves. It would have made more sense if at least one character had the fortitude to stop and say, "Wait, what's really the problem here?" I'm sorry that it didn't happen. I had hoped that Daughter would have gotten better as the story went on, that at some point our main character, Karin, would see how repulsive and self-centered her actions really were and grow, but again, no it didn't happen. At this point, I can honestly say that Magel's Ghost will not be on my TBR list. It's just too much drama, not enough resolution. ( )

At the start I was intrigued by the book and thought it would be a quirky look at family dysfunction but as the book wore on it seemed as if parts were included just to shock or disgust. A story of true and complete family dysfunction the book quickly became almost unbearable in its frequent discussion of incest. The main character became more and more unlikeable. The plot became little more than a way to shock readers instead of telling a story. Would not recommend ( )
