Don't remember it very well, but I do recall special illustrations and I do expect that I liked it as I generally do like these kinds of anthologies. I do remember that the stories were more about metaphor, identity, poetry, stuff like that, than they were about adventure. ( )

I always seem to choose children's books based on the drawings. After all, the stories should be magical and good illustrations will enhance the magic. Joe Servello's pen-and-ink drawings do the trick with this book, a wonderment of stories brought to life by William Kotzwinkle.

My favorite story in this collection is The Enchanted Horses, which begins with the description of Bonovita, a painter whose drawings "shimmer with life". How apt a description, given the lyrical drawings sprinkled thoughout this book.

I categorize books for kids based on the seasons, and this is definitely a post-Thanksgiving read, a book that will prepare the true believers of Santa for the magic of Christmas.
