Janet Frame moves into Frank Sargeson’s garden shed. I admired the way the writer had created the interactions between these two renowned New Zealand writers. It is a quiet book but fleshed out my thoughts on these writers and I think will increase my understanding and appreciation of Janet Frame’s books. ( )
Patrick Evans's new novel Gifted, his first in 21 years, attempts the daunting task of reinventing the mysterious riddle of this gifted writer, in particular, a crucial period of her creative blossoming when she lands on the Takapuna doorstep of another New Zealand literary icon, Frank Sargeson, the self-proclaimed "father of a nation's fiction". This is familiar territory for Evans, whose academic publications have focused on the history of New Zealand literature, and, in particular, the work of Janet Frame. But Gifted is sheer imagining, which allows Evans linguistic elasticity and creative freedom. He unravels the story of Janet living and working in the army hut nestled in Sargeson's backyard, a place that has provided occasional habitation for friends, Pertenece a las seriesJanet Frame (1)
One day in 1955 the 'father of New Zealand fiction' finds a young woman on his doorstep. A writer herself, she has recently emerged from a lengthy spell in hospital and is looking for somewhere safe to live and write. Somewhat to his own surprise, not to mention discomfort, he takes her in. What happens behind that high Takapuna hedge in the ensuing year is the story told in this delightful and moving novel.
