This book impressed me, and not many of these types of books do. I love that the reading selections required you to actually read the book, rather than a snipped up version. I love that poetry is included. I also thought the questions were deep and meaningful, requiring the student to actually think and reason. I think I might just use this book with my own kids. ( )

Jacob’s Ladder Reading Comprehension Program is a supplemental reading program that places an emphasis on higher order thinking. The idea and use of ladders is helpful because it’s a built-in scaffold to questions that ask students to draw logical conclusions from the reading. I like how there are examples provided. This allows teachers to use the lessons recommended in the text and adapt questions to individual lessons. Another interesting feature of the program is the ladder that includes the element of emotional development. It was developed to help children understand, express, and channel their emotions. Including emotion management in our lessons is important and necessary. Finally, I’m thankful that this program is aligned to the Common Core State Standards. These standards are new to our state; therefore, accessible materials that address these standards are limited. It is great to have this resource on hand. I think that Jacob’s Ladder is a great supplemental program to use in the classroom. It seems like it would be easy to tailor it to different texts and different students. ( )

Another great resource from Prufrock Press! The kindergarten teacher was excited when I showed her my latest prize and said she would use it right away. The books and poems picked are wonderful - classic children's poems and award winner. I'm off to look at the other books in this series. Bravo! ( )
