The action revolves around the production of Brand's latest blockbuster, meant to be a star vehicle to introduce his new European bombshell (the real-life Marlene Dietrich). Nevermind that the actress can't act, Brands' negotiations with MGM to get Clark Gable to play the male lead are getting nowhere, and the Broadway play he's bought for the screenplay is reworked so that it is unrecognizable to its author. A young woman moves to Hollywood in the 1930's, gets a job as a producer's secretary, and learns first-hand the insanity of the movie business. I wanted and expected to like this book, since it's a fun topic and I particularly enjoy epistolary novels, but it just didn't move me. I couldn't really get a handle on the main character, and too many of the letters just seemed like an excuse for straight-forward first-person narration. Parts are quite funny, however, including when the producer moves all of his operations to the hospital while his wife is in labor. ( )
