The error of judgement is the giving in to the negative beliefs about oneself. The results of doing so are disastrous. The plot is subtle. The ethical dilemma examined here is as topical as ever. The characters are particular, lively and realizable, despite the sixties English setting. A young and content couple crosses paths with Settler, a (somewhat) sociopathic but esteemed physian who manipulates people for his own amusement. I read this because it was on Anthony Burgess's list of the best books of the 20th century. I did not like it at all. I found the characters, their circumstances and the plot hopelessy dated. It did not transcend its time, and remained mired in the late 50's/early 60's. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Setter, an eminent Harley Street consultant, is trusted and admired by his circle of friends, devoting himself to the rehabilitation of the lonely and the misunderstood. But deep within himself Setter recognizes a latent streak of sadistic cruelty which enables him to perceive the truth about a delinquent youth whom he suspects of having taken part in a particularly repellent and senseless crime. It is for Setter to choose a punishment--and enforce it. An Error of Judgments a subtle study of human weakness and conflict. Partly a wry social comedy and partly a study in good and evil, it is brilliantly written and observed, assured and skillful, and a truly modern work.
