Effa Manley is the only woman to be inducted into the baseball hall of fame-posthumously in 2006. She was co-owner, with her husband, of the Newark Eagles. The Eagles won the Negro league world series in 1946. This book chronicles how she fought for equality for the Black ball players, as well as for Negro league management, as when baseball was integrated, major league teams stole players from negro league clubs without compensation. Who knew one person's love of baseball could change the game. Effa Manley is known for being the first woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. She created a team and fought for her players when no one else would. The book was a bit longer than most but shares a great deal of true history during the time. ( )

This is a true story of Effa Manley, an African American woman who loved baseball. She fought for what she believed in and changed history!

This is a powerful book for all to read. It shows that you can truly achieve your dreams if you fight hard enough. I really liked that the book gave a good background of the time period and included lots of information about civil rights.

I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the way Effa constantly fought for what she believed in. She never let something go that she felt wasn't right and that is amazing. I also love how she was a woman who changed baseball history. I always wonder how so many men coach softball but there aren't women in baseball. She was that woman. Great story. I will definitely rad again. ( )

Effa always loved baseball even though it was a "man's sport" and would love to watch Babe Ruth in Yankee Stadium. Never in her wildest dream did she ever believe she would own her very own team and become a powerful woman that was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In this book we see how a dream can become a reality and you should always swing for the fence in life.
This would be a great book to have our very own baseball game as a class. Exercise is a great way to get children's brain activity level up and this would be a fun building experience for this book.
I would also use this to talk about jazz. Effa grew up in the 20's listening to jazz and loved it. I would have the children watch some videos on jazz music and have them tell me what music would represent their own lives. ( )
