Used mainly for reconnaissance, the first wartime pilots merely waved in greeting at passing enemy pilots. By the end of WWI, airplanes had evolved into deadly fighting machines. Exciting, realistic illustrations and photos help portray bombers and fighters, the Fokker scourge, Zeppelins, the Red Baron and other aces, and the Last Battle. I was a little upset that the book completely skips over von Richthofen in the aces section. Granted he gets quite a bit of air time throughout the rest of the book, but they don't list any of statistics as they do the other aces. A bit of an oversight considering that he's the single most famous ace of WWI, and possibly the most famous ace in history (even if he's not the most accomplished). ( )
