I'd say that Thelonious Monk is my favorite jazz musician. I also enjoy Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Clark, Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon...

The list goes on; there are too many to list in one post.

The bulk of my taste in jazz spans the years 1955-1965. My interest tends to drop off as the artists became more experimental and free-form. But, to each their own!

Who really grabs you?

My first love in jazz is the late '50s, and early '60s. I love what Miles did with modal jazz, and even dig the more abstract Coltrane stuff (Ascension). And Monk. I think my second jazz album was a greatest hits by Monk. (My first was Kind of Blue, bought in the 80s, not when it came out.)

Recently (the last few years) I have been on an Ellington/Basie kick, and would love to get my hands on some Chick Webb.

I did a show on the B-list of jazz; Dexter Gordon, Bud Powell, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, etc. I love the Giants--Miles, Trane, Bird, Monk (I have an affinity for the '50s) but the point of the show was that the other guys were just a shade less brilliant.

I do a jazz show on KUAC (kuac.org if you want to listen) but it is on very late--10 to midnight, Alaska time.

Cool. Thanks for joining!

Can I find webcasts or podcasts of your show online? I'd like to give it a listen.

Recently, I've been listening to lots of Lou Donaldson. Donaldson recordings in the mid-late sixties get very soulful and funky, with the Hammond organ (usually played by Big John Patton). I can just groove out to it.

We don't do podcast. There is live streaming, but that is all. Sorry.

Have you heard much of Don Ellis' stuff?

Ah, too bad. Maybe one of these nights I'll have to stay up to listen.

No, I'm, not familiar with Don Ellis.
