In the Mathematics and in the Pro and Con groups, there's a topic called something like "math wars".

But there's a more general problem:
Waat should be in the curriculum for grade school, high school or general undergraduate education?

Should little kids be taught cursive handwriting? Diagramming sentences? Long division? Matrix algebra? Probability? What?

More to the point, why?

What should determine what is "in" and what is "out" of the syllabus?

Lets leave a side, for the moment, whether the extremely bright or the extremely not so bright should be taught differently from the "ordinary" student. Lets assume that there is or should be some core curriculum which all "ordinary" students are expected to master.

What are the criteria and what are subjects that make the cut?
