Can anyone recommend some good "open world" vampire novels/series? (For those who don't know what that means, "open world" means that humans in general know that the vampires exist.) I've read the Anita Blake, Riley Jensen, & Sookie Stackhouse series already.

Thanks.

Kim Harrison's "Rachel Morgan series" (a/k/a "The Hollows series"), the first book of which is Dead Witch Walking with subsequent books all having titles that are take-offs of Clint Eastwood movies. Be sure to read the books in order, because there's a good deal of back-story from one to the other.

Also, be careful about doing too much reading about this series on the Web. There are some (probably well-meaning) fan sites that include some serious SPOILERS.

A very basic summary, though, is that it's an alternate history in which a genetic engineering project gone awry wipes out an enormous percentage of the human population through the T-4 Angel Virus, spread through a mutated tomato (as a result of which humans abhor tomatoes, including pizza, and pizza parlors are patronized mainly by "Inderlanders" such as witches, vampires, and the like).

The main characters are Rachel Morgan (a heterosexual witch), Ivy Tamwood (a bisexual vampire), and Jencks (a philoprogenitive pixy) who form a detective agency called Vampiric Charms. (As a result of an unfortunate misplacement in a Yellow Pages listing, it's sometimes mistakenly thought to be a dating service for the vampirically oriented.) The relationship between Rachel and Ivy is particularly interesting, and the series combines mystery-thriller with Buffyish camp.

I've just started on called Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Sunshine works in a bakery (she makes cinnamon rolls as big as your head) and has a simple life until she goes to the lake and is captured by vampires.

I'm not far into it but so far its amazing.

It's a young adult series, but it's called "House of Night" by PC and Kristin Cast. The first one is Marked. It is a totally different take on vampires, but I found it pretty interesting.

how about Jenna Black's Morgan Kinsley series, it's more demonic than vampiric, but it's set in a world that knows about demons, people can choose to host these demons, but Morgan is an exorcist who evicts the demons that do bad things. start with the devil inside.

also, Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels world, magic goes up and down in waves, changing at different times of the day/night. Full of Magic, Vampires, Werewolves and sword carrying women :) start with Magic Bites.

I recommend C.T. Adams Thrall series, starting with Touch of Evil. Kate Reilly went against the Thrall, a parasite that host in people and are simlar to vamps, they categorise pepole into Prey/Not-Prey and Kate is luckily in the not-prey category, but they have other plans for her.

Thanks for the recommendations! I read Sunshine years ago and loved it. I also love the House of Night series. I always think of that as a YA series - it never occurred to me that it's also open world.

Booklizard, you might also try Vamped by David Sosnowski which is as open world as you can get. The world is all vampires and humans are raised on farms for food. But the protagonist finds a "free ranging" human child.

Tortured Skin by James C. Gillen.

Kind of a different, darker and more epic vein (ha!) but I love Anne Bishop's The Black Jewels Trilogy. Might take a little while to get into it, and it's not really urban at all.

Also Patricia Brigg's Mercy series - more focused on werewolves but vampires are in it. And it's really good!

Another YA series Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires. Humans in general don't know about vampires, but the entire town does and has a culture which is centered on their existence. And all the books take place in the town.
