A number of biographies devote at least some attention to the friends and confidants of presidents over their lives. I thought it might be worthwhile to include them in a thread as well. Feel free to point out interesting things you find out, or interesting reads others might enjoy.

For example, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were buddies with the physician Benjamin Rush. Rush helped get them writing letters to each other again after their mutual goodwill disintegrated through their respective presidencies. I've read Benjamin Rush: Patriot and Physician to get a better sense of who he was and what his life was about. Interestingly, Rush distrusted Washington's leadership and was even implicated in a cabal against him, leading in some measure to Rush's declining influence.
