This is probably a piddling point, but if this group includes homeric Greek then maybe it shouldn't be called 'classical'. Really too silly to mention.

I'm a stickler for precise use of terms, too; but unless some specific distinction is being made between classical literature (about 500 BCE-about 323 BCE) in contrast with archaic, hellenistic, etc., I'd say it's quite acceptable to use the term classical in the broad sense of Homer to pre-Byzantine (wherever one would care to set the beginning of the Byzantine period). In general practice, "classical" Greek literature is ancient Greek literature, as contrasted with Byzantine and modern Greek literature. In fact, that is how academic Classics departments use and always have used the term.
