Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales 1995
This is a facsimile of the 1913 edition of the Fairy Tales written by Hans Christian Andersen in Danish between 1835 and 1872. They were progressively published in English from 1846. This Folio Society book is a facsimile of seventeen of the stories taken from a 1913 edition published by Constable & Company.
The 16 bound-in colour plates and 93 drawings by W. Heath Robinson are also taken from the 1913 edition.
There is no introduction or preface.
This book was reprinted multiple times by the FS in the decade after its first release. It was in series with four other Edwardian tales :-
- The Arabian Nights
- The Fables of Aesop
- Grimm’s Fairy Tales
- Perrault’s Fairy Tales (reviewed here.).
The xi + 290 page book is bound in red cloth with an central design in white and gold by Robinson and gilt decorations on the cover. The page tops stained red, the endleaves are pale yellow and the red slipcase measures 26.2x19.9cm.
