King Henry’s Map of the British Isles. BL Cotton MS Augustus Ii9; Map and Commentary volume – LIMITED EDITION - 2009

This is a facsimile of a map that hung on the walls of Hampton Court Palace in the reign of Henry VIII over 500 years ago. It was a map that guided Henry in his governance of his kingdom. Although distorted to modern eyes (particularly with regard to Ireland and Scotland), it was the most realistic depiction of the British Isles available at that time. There are 633 place names on the map, most of which are catalogued in the accompanying commentary volume written by Peter Barber.

The map (46x63.1cm.) is printed actual size on Neobond, a material that replicates vellum. The back of the map is reproduced as accurately as the front. It is tied with a red silk ribbon and housed in a heavy card box (48.3x9.9x9.4cm.) that is clcovered in dark blue cloth and gilt printed with fleur-de-lis and Henry’s initials, with an identifying mark from the British Library on each end. The base of the box has a curved maroon felt liner, while the lid is lined with maroon paper to which a title and limitation label is attached. The box is closed with a rather flimsy small brass clasp.

The 158 page commentary volume gives an overview of the history of mapping of Britain, details on the manufacture and history of the map, and has 48 integrated colour illustrations and a cross reference of names on the map to modern names and other maps. There are extensive notations. The book is three-quarter bound in dark blue buckram with a paper front cover featuring a portrait of Henry VIII. It is housed in a dark blue slipcase front printed in gilt with Henry’s initials.

This publication was limited to 2750 copies, but they were not numbered. The original price was £95, but it was slow to sell, and was discounted after a few years.

Only on the secondary market.
It seems to be selling for about US$250 now.
The Folio Archives reviews are limited to publications that are more than ten years old and no longer available from the Folio Society so that it cannot be claimed that I am promoting any current title.

There's a copy of this in my local charity shop for £100 at the moment, not sure if it's worth that.
