I know. It breaks my heart a little to part with any book, no matter the quality of the content. But even our favorites can reach a point where they're only taking up space, or where they need to find a new home and a new reader to inspire.

So where in Atlanta is best to sell or trade used books? Which book stores have the best intake policies? Which just give cash in exchange?

Or is it better just to sell via Amazon (Marketplace) online?

Unfortunately Im not aware of a really good used book store near me so Ive begun using PaperBackSwap. I have had really good success with finding books I like in good shape and their wish list feature is great. I now have a huge 'to be read' pile which I really like.

Eagle Eye Book Shop at North Decatur & Clairmont trades, but I don't think they buy any longer; great folks and great books in any case. Also, most any Book Nook location; but BN credit mounts up quickly, since it only counts toward half your purchase price. At least BN no longer seems to limit as much what kinds of credit can be used for which books -- it was always frustrating to use classics credit only for classics, and sci-fi credit only for sci-fi. (Or maybe I've just settled in, or moved on?) I'd be very interested to hear of others' experiences, or if I'm all wrong. Thanks!

Once & Again Books only does for items of high value, as of a year ago.

The Book Nook at North Druid Hills and Clairemont is a great place, close to the VA hospital.

I no longer go to The Book Nook at North Druid Hills and Clairmont in the evening, having experienced an extremely unpleasant encounter with one of their night clerks. The last time I was in their shop, he went out of his way to be aggressive, offensive and rude to a customer (who was buying a stack of books at the time!) for no apparent cause that I could tell. While it saddens me, I have no use for such behavior and refuse to support it.

On the other hand, book shopping options in and around Decatur are only slightly restricted by my reaction to this experience; I may still stop by The Book Nook when other clerks are there, and the area still offers several other good, independent -- and pleasant! -- retailers of new and used books.

I also find some great finds/deals at the many Goodwill, Last Chance and St Vincent de Paul thrift shops in the area. Although you can't sell your books there of course your donations generally go to good causes.

My office is right next to Books Again in Decatur. It is right across from Decatur High School. In these times it is hard to get cash for books but the store has a great selection and will give store credit.

I'm in the burbs, but I'm going to include my favorite here too. Near the Mall of Georgia, there is a great store called "Books for Less." I exchange there often! Your points take off a portion of other used books you buy and their new books are discounted too.

I haven't sold at A Cappella Books, but I know they buy used. Favorite bookstore in Atlanta!

Oh, for the return of the great Oxford Books on Peachtree (and later on Pharr) Rd...
