Thank you Andrew for this very, very interesting discussion when I know how busy you must be now with your school and your children going back or not. Thanks to all of you, my friends, for making this one of the most discussed books that we have done in a long time.

I do have one question for you all. What do you think of his use of all the place names and descriptions of the setting? This is my locale, so i am very familiar with all the streets, sites, and cities he is wandering through, but i wonder if it detracts from the story for anyone who doesn’t. I don’t see it adding much..and wonder if it slows the pacing. For me, it’s kinda fun to see him driving on the same streets as me..and getting hung up in traffic near the hollywood bowl—been there and done that. However, i think it’s overdone.

>6 bluebird_: I can see how interesting that must be for you. It doesn't really bother me I guess. I assume that that they might most of the time be fictional. Some authors really do over do it. I hate when an author finds that they need to write about every turn and how long it takes someone to get to where they are going and which streets they are traveling on and which streets they could have taken...how many things they passed on the highway...are you bored out of your mind yet? It's almost as if they are going to be paid for the book by the word and want to get as much as possible. Who cares if it applies or adds anything to the story or not. I love the Alex Delaware series that Jonathan Kellerman writes..but he is the world's worse traffic/street describer. I've got to where I just skip over it all. Steve Hamilton wrote the Alex McKnight series that I also really liked. It took place in the Upper Peninsular of Michigan where we usually visit two or three times a year. Alex McKnight, the character in his stories, was brought up in Detroit and often makes trips there in the books. Hamilton mentions buildings and attractions along the way that his character traveled that I always stopped and thought "I know where and what that is. I've been by that many times". I guess if you are familiar with area it maybe bores you less or you just find it more interesting knowing that millions of people are taking the journey through the book that you actually take in a car on a regular basis.

>6 bluebird_: I don't have a problem with it but like you, I've traveled those same streets as well as visited some of those same locations (Gorky's, The Pantry, Ports, Loews Santa Monica).
Connelly does the same thing in the Haller series (but for a different reason) and that seems to work out ok.
I noticed we also get a lot of the driving around with Robert Hunter because of his insomnia

>8 bhabeck:.I find it very funny that we get Hunter’s road trips because he can’t sleep

I do think if you know a place it adds to the book; but if you don't know it, then it's quite meaningless.

Thank you. I enjoyed this read and all the questions and comments.
>6 bluebird_: I too enjoy it. I have only lived in the LA suburbs and Orange County. But I have been to quite a few of the locations and streets mentioned in the book. So it's nice to reminisce memories that come up when he mentions a location where I have visited.
>8 bhabeck: Who is Robert Hunter? How far behind would I be on that series?

>12 jodiesohl: you're way behind on that series - it's the books I've been giving you for the past couple years (they're in your desk drawer :) ) But, I think you'd like that series a lot and would probably zip through the 8 to catch up.
