I'm currently in the country outside of Ankh-Morpork as Sam Vimes investigates crime while on his vacation in Snuff.

Where are you currently?

Nearly got sucked in to Scalzi's Redshirts via the teaser chapters, then borrowed The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson, but I've wound up Beyond the Black River with Conan and his scouting band in canoes hunting an evil Pictish sorceror (free epub at Mobileread). It's very short, I think I'll end up back at Seth Dickinson. Howard spends a lot of time describing everyone's body and physical movement and characteristics. It's really immediate and engaging, but sometimes I think I'm reading romance, which I think is not my preferred genre.

Finished Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher. Kind of silly in a sort of fun kind of way.

Finished the last Magister book by Friedman, Legacy of Kings. I enjoyed the whole trilogy, though this last one, disconcertingly, changed some of the "rules" about magisters in order to reach her conclusion, which also seemed just a bit too tidy and pat. But both of those are common features I've seen before when authors are trying to wrap up a complex epic. Overall, a good saga.

Revisiting a book I know I read and enjoyed many, many years ago, but have only the vaguest memory of the plot - The Eyes of the Dragon. Location so far is pretty much "ye olde generic medieval kingdom".

Currently in ye olde generic medieval k... wait, Aurdwynn. The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Probably overstating things somewhat about the ye olde in context of Seth Dickinson, but I've been thinking about this and what it means after reading a heap of Conan stories and the Princess Bride. Best fantasy books I ever read were Donaldson's Mordant's Need - super conventional medieval setting, so, not really fantastic?

Wrapping up my time with the Gentlemen Bastards (for the foreseeable future) with The Republic of Thieves.

About a 100 pages in, it's catching my interest better than Red Seas Under Red Skies but it's making me realize that I really am not a fan right now of narrative structures that rely heavily on flashbacks. I love love looooove books where the present day events are informed and impacted by events that took place prior to the book (like in ASoIaF, for example) but I want the author to get the emotional punch of those past events across to me in the main narrative. I had the same issue with Twelve Kings in Sharakhai semi-recently.

Traitor Baru Cormorant was good, I was fooled more than once. At the same time I was binge watching the French tv show The Bureau, and Baru Cormorant fit in with all the double spying and sneaking and tricking.

>26 Cecrow: I do! I always do.... I prefer to read a series back-to-back, so I usually collect all of them before even starting. I also have all three of the Fionavar ones in the waiting pile.

I'm about 100 pages in and completely hooked! GGK is such a good writer.
