How do ya'll feel about the upcoming release of The Time Traveler's Wife? It's in post-production and scheduled to come out this summer. Here's the link to imdb.

Apparently Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams are the leads. Their work has been mixed in previous films. Robert Schwentke is the director and Jeremy Leven adapted the screenplay. I can't say that I've seen any of their films.

My fear is that the film will be more of a schmaltzy sappy "chick flick" rather than reflect the complex and sometimes dark book. If reviews end up saying as much, I can't see the film. I just like the book too much. This was one of those rare books that I just got completely absorbed into. I got attached to the characters and the world of the novel and was sad when I had to leave it. I still have a particular feeling when I think about the book and I don't want it to be ruined by seeing a crappy film.

I'm interested in the music they use for it, though. Henry was into the punk scene, if I recall, so let's hope for lots of that. I was listening to a lot of Death Cab for Cutie at the time, though, and their song "The New Year" seems to perfectly fit the tone and themes of the book--let alone the obvious connection with the important recurring holiday of New Year's in the book. Has anyone else thought this would be perfect for the film? Here's a link to listen to it.

I'll believe it when I see it! This film has been through so much tzurriz getting made. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston's production company bought the rights when the book was first published, and then they got divorced and that went down the tubes. And I can't count the number of times that I've heard, "it's going to start filming in {pick your month}".

I see by the imdb site that the film is still in production ("Because this project is categorized as being in production, the data is subject to change; some data could be removed completely."). So I'm not holding my breath.

I'm always excited when they make a movie based on a book I've read. I enjoy seeing how someone else imagined the book. I never expect it to be as good as the book, so I usually see the movie with a " I wonder how they changed it, this will be fun" attitude.

Time Traveler's Wife is one of my all time favorite books. I look forward to seeing it on screen. If the movie sucks, and come nowhere close to capturing the essence of the book I won't be surprised nor disappointed. It won't ruin the book for me.

2: The film is in *post*-production. In simple terms, that means the footage has been filmed already and now they're just editing it together to make a movie out of it.

Whether it'll actually be any good is another matter.

I'd hate to have that editing job. I love the book but I'm constantly refering to the chapterheads to refresh myself on how old each character is...

Yeah, the sequencing of the film will be interesting. Will they set the events in the same order as the book? Will they simply follow one character chronologically? It could get quite confusing.

After I made my original post, I realized that I have seen one of Robert Schwentke's films: Flightplan. It's the mystery/thriller with Jodi Foster on a plane. It wasn't a bad film, though nothing special. It makes me feel better about it not being a "chick flick" at least!

I'd like to see the film but if the actors don't look right to me (how I pictured Henry and Clare when I read the book) then sometimes that puts me off the next time I read the book.

I'd be a bit more flexible on my idea of Henry than of Clare but the actress who would most suit my idea of her would be Laura Prepon (Donna in That 70's Show) and Henry as a Toby McGuire type.

You can see production still at IMBD. Clare, young and old, looked good to me. Henry wasn't quite what I expected but I warmed up to him quickly.

Though I should warn you that Clare didn't remind me at all of Laura Prepon--whom I dislike to extremes (no special reason, just a visceral reaction to her look, voice, and the character of Donna).

It's strange how we can read the same book and build a completely different image of each character. I read the book before I ever saw Laura Prepon but when I did I knew she was 'my' Clare. My 'worst' Clare would be Nicole Kidman.

I've just been to look at the production stills and Henry is okay, Clare (as I've said) isn't quite how I pictured her, she's too classically beautiful and doesn't have the ethereal look I pictured her to have. Alba is okay but I always picture her with short, jet black, bobbed hair. It was Gomez who startled me the most, I picture him as a kind of Uber-punk with really white-blonde hair to start with and then kind of like Moby when he is older.

I thought of who I wish had done this film. Too late now, but JJ Abrams or another of the folks who do the TV series "Lost" would have been excellent for dealing with all of the time issues.

I'm so with you there Jody! In fact, I just posted the same thing on another site and then Googled 'Laura Prepon, The Time Traveler's Wife' to see if anyone else had the same view. I finished The Time Traveler's Wife yesterday (we spell it "Traveller" in Australia ;-) I can so picture Laura Prepon in that role (I actually had to search for her name from a 'That 70's Show' link). Whilst I like Rachel McAdams, physically she's not my Clare. However she is a good actress. Totally agree with you on Nicole Kidman as well - no way. I pictured Henry as a leaner character - although I think Eric Bana will do him justice. On another tangent, Eric Bana had his start in comedy here in Australia - he can do wickedly accurate impersonations... ;-)
