MacLeod's Books, 455 Pender Street West, Vancouver
MacLeod's is one of those bookstores you will either love or hate. Neat freaks need not read on. It occupies a large corner plot between West Pender and Richards Street and from the moment you step over the threshold you become a prospector; for within lies treasure. You can feel it, even if you can't immediately see it. To say that there isn't an inch of space not occupied by books is an exaggeration as there is a small amount of bare carpet that serves as a pathway leading you around the store, but even this is strewn with piles of paperbacks that need to be cautiously sifted through, being careful not to disturb their dynamic equilibrium or the cluttered hush of the place. Before we left I think it is fair to say that I was already worried about our baggage allowance! Opposite MacLeod's and up a flight of rickety stairs is:
Criterion Books, 434 Pender Street West, Vancouver
Also shamelessly messy but smaller than it's rival, it is just as well stocked and worth an hour of any bibliophiles time. Around the corner with a less appealing presence, but no less appealing stock, is:
Albion Books 523 Richards Street, Vancouver
For those prepared to wander a litte further afield
Pulpfiction Books, 2422 Main Street Vancouver
is the yang to MacLeod's yin. Neat, tidy and brightly lit, this store has a fantastic plethora of used Penguins in all their glorious, multifarious historical covers. A must for collectors, plus the staff are really nice too!
Tanglewood Books 1553 Broadway West, Vancouver
Situated on Broadway this unassuming bookstore is small but well stocked.

Just to say what a great group to have, i love to spend hours in used book shops or go to the local market and find the second hand book stall. I live in the UK but there is one great used book shop i have visited that was in Glastonbury but i think it has now closed. I love the old book smell as much as i love the new book smell. Nobody will shop with me anymore as i spend far to long (according to them) hunting for books. I dont see how you can spend far to long, as it is probably one of the greatest pastimes there is!!

Avoid Albion Books in Vancouver! the guy who runs it, Dave, is completely psychotic on the days he forgets to take his medication. Paranoid, rude and his personal hygiene leaves much to be desired. His past employees could tell you stories that would curl your toes. All that would be tolerable if there were anything of value in there. Everything even remotely decent is supremely over-priced. If you want a heaping dose of abuse and bad vibes this could be your place.

Albion Books is a wonderful bookstore with low prices. I often find out-of-print or obscure or fascinating books there that you can't find anywhere else in Vancouver. The bookdealer is always helpful. (If you read the above review, you can tell the writer must have some personal issues that coloured his experience) Everyone else knows this place & recommends it.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time in Albion when I lived in Vancouver. I never had any interactions with the owner, so I can't comment on that. Lots of great books at decent prices though.
I used to spend way more time in McClouds....but that's personal preference, I suppose.
