What does one do if one wants to combine a specific tag with a more ambiguous tag. For instance, the tag 'John Calvin' refers to the great protestant, but the Tag 'Calvin' refers to not only John Calvin but also the comic strip named Calvin and Hobbes. Should these two tags (John Calvin, Calvin) be combined?

Absolutely not. Tags should never be combined unless it is 100% sure, without doubt, that not only do the tags mean the same thing, but also have the same connotations and no significant social difference.

My opinion on this is that tags shouldn't be combined AT ALL, frankly - but in this specific example, such a combination would go directly against the specific tag-combining guidelines provided by LT.

I completely agree with philosojerk. I, too, don't really like the idea of combining tags at all (tags are supposed to be/stay personal, and combining seems to take away from that), but in the OP case, it is definitely not right.
