What are your thoughts on what Margaret said in her letter to Morse?

Margaret thought that Bernard killed Slyvia so she wanted to confess to the murder because she knew Bernard was having an affair for about six months or more. She explained how she followed Bernard and saw him in the car with Sylvia. She said she felt more anger than jealousy and she hit Sylvia over the head with a tyre-lever. She also explained how Bernard knew because he passed her on the way back to Oxford. She said that if Bernard had be lying, it was only to protect her. She also said that she blamed herself because she had neither been a good wife to Bernard not a good mother to his children. She said she was most bitterly sorry and realized that there was no excuse for her behaviour.

I think she wanted to make sure Bernard would be protected so he could care for the children.

I believe her 'confession' to be a lie; though why she would bother to try to cover for Bernard if she thought he'd murdered the girl is beyond me. (Another sign of Margaret's mental imbalance?)

I think Margret thinks Bernard is the killer but on the other hand I get the idea that Bernard thinks that Margaret is the killer. These two need to sit down and talk...desperately.

She believed Bernard to be the murderer. This was her trying to ensure that he would be free to look after the kids.

Before we knew what was in the letter, I thought maybe she was going to direct Morse's suspicions onto him to avenge her for his unfaithfulness. However, it appears that she actually thought Bernard was guilty of the killing and was trying to protect him to the end by "confessing"

I agree that Margaret was suffering with mental health issues. Interesting how she thought she was protecting Bernard. So sad!
