I have read 58 of these already. Plus other works from some of these authors. I clearly have a long way to go with "thrillers" and "travel". There doesn't seem to be a lot of Historical Fiction here.

Great to see a new face around here! You're starting approximately the same place I did when I began, and even in almost the same proportions per category, too. I haven't been knocking these off very quickly so if you're fast and dedicated you'll find I'm easy to surpass, lol.

I'll probably get around to Wuthering Heights and maybe the Hemingway next year, and I've got a copy of the Vonnegut somewhere that I haven't read yet.

there are quite a lot of these that have been on my wishlist for some time, so maybe it will encourage me to get on it already. at least, in the fiction list. that is a LOT of memoirs there...

Some of the memoirs are by authors who have other work in the list (Kafka, Mansfield, Nabokov ...). I'm taking the approach of reading their work first, then their memoir. I guess it could work the other way too.

Found some mistakes for all of us to correct:

Add:
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald (CLASSIC)
Robinson Crusoe - Daniel Defoe (CLASSIC)
Memoirs of Hadrian - Marguerite Yourcenar (MODERN)

Move:
The Pilgrim's Progress (should be CLASSIC)

Edit if you Want (all MODERN):
Official List: Tales of Odessa / Your List Says: The Collected Stories of Isaak Babel
Official List: The Outsider / Your List Says: The Stranger
Official List: Le Grand Meaulnes / Your List Says: The Wanderer or The End of Youth
Official List: Declares Pereira / Your List Says: Pereira Declares
Official LIst: Confessions of Zeno / Your List Says: Zeno's Conscience

got it! although i've combined Classic and Classic Fiction together just to streamline a bit. i'm sure we will collectively add to this list over time, so let us know if you think of any others that should be on here. is it still 501 now?

8Cecrow
Ago 17, 2016, 9:47 am

Yes, the 501 has never been updated (no new editions unfortunately) so it's a static list (won't be adding to it). But these errors were in my LT list that everybody's copying from. The total was only 498, so I've figured out what was missing, and spotted those discrepancies while I was doing it. ;)

ok, I've officially surrendered on this challenge. There are just so many sections that I'm not very interested in, so I don't think it is quite the right challenge for my tastes.

I am still doing a 501 challenge though, but I have adapted the listings to categories that I would actually like to explore further.

so, be forewarned, anyone who is thinking of doing the ACTUAL 501 book challenge! Do not copy my lists; they are no longer accurate for the Must-Read Challenge.

Editado: Sep 9, 2019, 9:19 am

I've been keeping a running spreadsheet of other titles I think of as "another 501 books to read", up to about sixty in that list so far. But again, many of which I may never read myself, just titles I think sound worthy.

It would be a bit of work to parse out which titles you've added here; can you post that separately, maybe in a new topic, just for fun?
