Started The Thng today.

I have the Abacus PB and read the Dave Eggers intro which was OKish and just finished the "Year of Glad" which in another world could be a nice intro to a normal linear novel I guess.

The only thing I can say right now is that his use of the English language is truly exceptional.

Excited at the possibillity of reading this opus.

I agree but how on Earth did you get that from the first section which elsewhere has been, I think fairly, described as 'dry' and 'bureaucratic'. Not criticizing, just curious.

(Also curious how to get quotes in these comments.)

Maybe a little bureaucratic on purpose, but dry? I don't think so.

I'm 50 pages in and enjoying the experience so far but not yet able to imagine myself reading this without reading anything else at the same time. We'll see.

Again, that's my only regret. I will be reading this for a very long time. I sincerely doubt that I will have time for other books.

I'm reading short stories and some criticism on the side, occasional digressions to break up the all-consuming intensity of IJ.

Funny enough it was while reading IJ that I first started reading more than one book as a time. (I typically have at four going at once, and it's almost three years later)

I'm reading Kureishi on the side. He's great
