Right now, any combining page (for authors or for works) goes to the same HelpThing:Combining page, http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php?title=HelpThing:Combine&redirect=...
This is because first part of the url for combining authors or works is the same: combine.php, followed by specifics on whether it's an author or work.
At some point, someone redirected that HelpThing page to a Help/FAQ page on book combining. However, we probably need a proper HelpThing page (and to delete that redirect), which could then be separated into subpages for combining authors and combining works.
Combining is a pretty complicated affair, and maybe we don't need to reinvent the wheel here. At the very least, though, I think we need a landing page that deals with both authors and works (and anything else that might point to that landing page), and that then links to the existing explanations on combining for each one. Perhaps then we can figure out whether there are gaps in the help text. I suspect there are some, especially for author combining.

That seems to be left over from the old Help/FAQ pages, but could (and should probably) be converted to a HelpThing page. Anyway, this page seems to have a good skeleton for what would need to be explained on a help page, but needs some filling in.
I'm not sure I agree with you on the title though: something more all-encompasssing like author organization, or just "improve this author," would be more accurate, since disambiguation is just one of several features.
