I'm spending part of August with my parents in the CA San Fernando Valley and I would like to know if anyone knows of a good used bookstore locally? (This could include Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, Simi Valley, TO, or even downtown.) My old favorite, the A and C Book Cellar off Vanowen was gone last time I visited and is greatly missed.

Dutton's Books. I'm looking at one of their bookmarks from 1981, which has them at 5146 Laurel Canyon Blvd, N. Hollywood, ph: 769-3866/877-9222. I believe they are still in business, gods bless 'em.

According to the Wiki, Dutton's closed out a few years ago. Anybody know if they're up and running under another name, perhaps?

Wikipedia? I find entries there in which my spurious quotes have been cited as fact without any attribution. Try this:

This is another way to search for used bookstores. Generally I prefer Google Books but MapQuest has been catching my attention lately as a useful tool:

http://www.mapquest.com/?le=t&q=used+books+near+91601

The 91601 area is called North Hollywood and is the zip code home of Iliad Books which is probably the best in the area. Brand Books is also exceptional for several areas. Both are open late Mon-Sat. Others are not so great but it depends on what you are looking for and how much effort you want to put into it.

With bookstores closing all the time it is probably worth a phone call (long distance is part of most cell phone plans) to be sure that they will be open when you plan to visit.
