This prequel about Ryber and the Sightwitch Sisters takes place about a year before the rest of the series. It answers some questions about the Paladins, Kullen, the Fury, and it sets up the events to come in Bloodwitch. ( )

I liked this story. I overall loved the structure of this novel. I loved learning more about the witchland series overall. I really did liked how this story connected back to Kullen. I felt like this story sometimes had to many mini storylines that I did not always spy the connections. I was engaged in the story. I really did like this story, but I wanted more and just one clear story. I am excited to see how this novella connects to the whole story as well! ( )

I will say I really loved this book. Not only did it give more insight into the Witchlands world, but it also gave us Ryber who I really hope has a larger part to play in the series now. I feel like until now the Witchlands had a small story to tell but with the addition of Sightwitch the story is gaining momentum and stories are starting to make more sense.

Ryber is great, I love how she was so strict, but eventually through her progress of trying to save her Threadfamily so learns to bend and break rules. The Rook was by far my favorite character (despite being a bird) and the illustrations were great, and with the side notes added a dimension that I didn't know I was missing until now.

I know that they won't include that in the next books but it doesn't mean I can't enjoy them. ( )

Sightwitch is a novella in The Witchlands by Susan Dennard. It is the back story for Ryber Fortiza, a side character from the main series. The story is told as a series of journal entries primarily by Ryber, with the occasional entry by her threadsister Tanzi and historical entries by the famous Sightwitch Sister Eridysi Gochienka. I find this style of storytelling hit or miss and this one ended up working for me better than I expected. One of the neat things is all the art included as part of the journal. I'm very glad I read this as a physical copy as the drawings may have been shrunk too small on my Kindle.

I enjoyed the story. Ryber's portion focuses on her life in the Sitewitch Sisters Convent about a year before the start of the main series and her original meeting with Kullen. It explains nicely what it means to be a Sightwitch and is a decent, if short, adventure story. More interesting were the historical flashbacks provided by Eridysi's journal entries. These added another layer to the world building of the Witchlands that I found fascinating. I wish there had been more of them.

Without going into too many details for fear of spoilers, I'm excited to see how this will tie back to the main series with Bloodwitch. ( )

The world of The Witchlands is rich with mystery, mythology and history and in this companion novella, we learn about the Sightwitches (as told by the last, Ryber Fortiza), Tanzi Lamanaya (told through past journal entries) and the thousands-year old diary of Eridysi Gochienka (the most powerful Sightwitch that ever lived).

Ryber came to the Sightwitch Sisters Convent as a child but she was never gifted with the Sight. All of her sisters have been summoned, including her Threadsister Tanzi, and she is now alone, until she stumbles upon a mysterious ship captain who has no memory of who he was or where he is. Ryber is determined to find out what happened to her sisters and to save them - whatever the cost may be. As she unravels the mysteries of Eridysi's Lament and the history of Sirmaya, we are transported back in time that sheds light on many of the events mentioned in Truthwithch and Windwitch. The story ends just shortly before the beginning on Truthwitch and sets up the next book, Bloodwitch.

I was highly disappointed in this - not because it was bad, or boring, or anything like that. I was upset because I waited months for this book, had high hopes, LOVED Truthwitch and Windwitch, can't wait for Bloodwitch, and felt that this was a let down. Although we are given loads of great history and the Witchlands now makes that much more sense, I felt that this was not necessary as a companion novella but could have been woven into the other books. I was disappointed that I expected to love it as much as the others, but it fell flat and didn't do anything for me. I will reread all three of these, in order of events most likely, before Bloodwitch releases but I just had higher hopes and this was not what I waited so long for. ( )

This was a good prequel to the Witchlands series. I enjoyed all the history and it helps readers to understand the magic system a lot better. I also liked how everything was laid out in here with pictures and journal entries.

The story is good, but very short. We hear from three POVs throughout. The book is half from a couple years before the Witchlands series starts and half from 1000 years before that. The portion of the book from the recent past alternates between Tanzi (Ryber’s best friend) and Ryber’s POV. The other half of the book occurs in the far past (1000 years ago) and is told from Eridysi Gochienka’s POV. The two different settings (near past and far past) alternate throughout the book.

Overall it’s a good story and provides some nice background on the history of this world and how magic works. I would recommend to fans of the series. I wouldn’t really recommend as a stand alone; there just wasn’t enough story here to allow this to stand alone well. ( )
