My little book collection began when my father temporarily lost his mind and decided to empty his bookshelf of everything but the complete works of Shakespeare and a dictionary. I was able to rescue some amazing books from the boxes in the garage and make them mine. I didn't know what most of them were, but if my dad had kept them all those years, they must have been good. Many of those books are now my favourites. The rest of my shelf holds old books I couldn't help but buy at used bookstores, a few books I've been given, and books from school that I really enjoyed. I always like to have a few books on the shelf that I'm intrigued by, but haven't read. I still have a few books from that original bunch that I haven't read! I like knowing there are books waiting for me if I need them.

I'm a fan of dusty old books from libraries and used book stores. This means I'm a bit out of touch when it comes to new books, but this partiality fits in well with my background as a history student, so I don't fight it. There's nothing I love better than learning about history from a novel! I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction; I enjoy reading a novel while learning about the time period it was written in. Knowing about the background of a book helps to make sense of it, and, at the same time, the book gives insight into its time in a way only a primary source can.
