Christine Zamoyska-Panek (1925–2009)

Christine Zamoyska-Panek was born on the ancestral estate to a wealthy, aristocratic Polish family. During World War II, she took a job as a nurse in a hospital in Krakow, where she joined the Polish Resistance and aided Allied soldiers. At the end of the war, she escorted refugees into Czechoslovakia under Red Cross protection, and smuggled others fleeing the Red Army. She was arrested in Poland and tortured by the Soviets, but was helped to escape. Eventually, she married Julius Panek and emigrated to the USA, settling in Boston, Massachusetts.
