On the face of it, this looks like two books mashed into one -- on the place of women in Jordan and on the place of gays in Jordan. However the author successfully weaves together the stories of men and women into a greater whole whose broader subject is the freedom over one's own body. And of course the issues are far wider than just Jordan.

In style, it is told quite matter-of-factly, but this does not detract from the impact of the joys and tragedies of the events the characters go through. The is an element of "tell not show" to the writing, which is no bad thing in this case for Western readers who may be unfamiliar with some of the cultural background.
