This is a reference book in which the information is accessible by the interested reader, yet doesn't require one to be an art historian. There was more of a general overview of Tibetan Buddhism than of the relics and artwork but the illustrations were attractive.

Publisher's description:The temple architecture of India has a complex and varied history, spanning more than one and a half millennia. Temples of Gopakṣetra moves beyond a general survey of this subject to provide the first in-depth examination of temple building between AD 600 and 900. This was a period of extraordinary creativity and inventiveness, but in many parts of northern India the monuments have been ruined or heavily reconstructed. The Gwalioner region, known in ancient times as Gopakṣetra, is unique in that numerous temples, shrines, sculptures and inscriptions have been preserved. For this reason, Gwalior is crucial for understanding the development of architecture, sculpture and iconography in northern India.Using an integrated method of analysis, Temples of Gopakṣetra draws on the strengths of archaeological, textual, formal and cultural studies to create a comprehensive picture of these elaborate buildings. Temple plans, moulding profiles and iconographic programmes are considered in detail, while epigraphic records and numismatic evidence are used to date buildings and reveal the historical setting. The original Sanskrit terminology, accompanied by English equivalents, employed to describe the temples and their many complex parts. The style and structure of temple forms are emphasised, with sculpture being discussed in its architectural context. Finally, the information provided by inscriptions is used to reconstruct the social, cultural and political background of the buildings.Illustrated by a wide range of photographs and meticulously prepared maps and plans, Temples of Gopakṣetra is a key reference work for the history of sacred architecture in India.… (más)
