This story takes place near the beginning of World War II. It is about a fictitious ship in a fictitious battle. Except for this, however, the story is as realistic as it gets. The author, who is a former navy ship captain, knows his material well, and is an excellent writer. The author is meticulous about point of view, so that the reader always knows exactly from where he is viewing the action. And, that action is gripping, edge of-the-seat, page-turning... Captain Sheppard McLeod, Skipper of the Argonne, is a flawed human being whom the reader comes to know well. He rises to greatness despite his shortcomings. The reader views the battle through the eyes of the various participants - a young German submarine commander and his deputy, two German admirals, two British Admirals, and the American admiral, as well as several crew members on the Argonne and other American vessels. The author presents sufficient technical detail to hold the interest of navy aficionados, while keeping it sufficiently simple to hold the attention of everyone else. This is a wonderful read that I highly recommend to anyone interested in World War II, the Navy, the military, well...I think you get the idea!
