William Marvin Watson was born in Oakhurst, Texas on June 6, 1924. During World War II, he served with the Marines in the Pacific. He received a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in business administration from Baylor University. He managed the Chamber of Commerce in mostrar más Daingerfield, Texas, which led to a job with Lone Star Steel. In November 1964, he became Lyndon B. Johnson's special assistant to the president. In 1968, Watson was named postmaster general, then a cabinet-level position. He helped pave the way for the Post Office to become an independent agency. After Johnson left office, Watson went to work for Occidental Petroleum as executive vice president. His memoir, Chief of Staff: Lyndon Johnson and His Presidency written with Sherwin Markman, was published in 2004. He died on November 26, 2017 at the age of 93.
