This book gives an interesting insight into what meals were like while serving time on a merchant ship during WWII. This was the manual for onboard cooking for the U.S. Merchant Marine fleet. Reading through the recipes and instructions here brings back memories of what we were served on a Coast Guard cutter on 3 month Ocean Station patrols in the Pacific in the 60's; not much had changed. Most recipes begin with the ominous instruction "thaw the meat".
