this book is about a boy named Emmanuel who was born with only one functioning leg. He has a passion for riding bikes, and learns to overcome his setbacks and inspires many by riding for long distances. This book would be a good one in a classroom to talk about different disabilities and also to inspire students to accomplish things they think are impossible

This book is a true story of Emmanuel Yeboah, who is a boy born with only one functioning leg. He learns to ride a bike with one leg and is able to provide for his family through that. I would recommend this book to first-third graders. This age group would fit best because they can appreciate the content best and understand the story with the minimalist art.

Emmanuel's Dream is based on a real story about a disabled boy who rode 400 miles on a bike in just over a week. Based in Ghana, it is a story about a boy who lives his entire life refusing to be defined by his disability. Reading this story to any middle grade level or subject would be an insight to the culture in Africa, as well as create understanding among students for their disabled peers, boosting empathy.½

I think this informational text would be good for lower-mid elementary students. This book walks you through the life of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah and the challenges that he faces. He faces his disability of only having one leg, making friends, and caring for his sick mother Confort. This book brings the best message of “In this world, we are not perfect. We can only do our best.”

Born with a severely deformed leg, Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah was abandoned by his father as an infant, and raised by his mother, Comfort. Encouraged to do things for himself, he found a way to go to school and to participate in sports - both very unusual for disabled children in his native country of Ghana. Eventually, he set out on a four-hundred-mile bicycle journey around Ghana, bringing attention and awareness, both in his country and around the world, to the lives of disabled people...

Emmanuel's Dream: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah is certainly an inspiring book, and I read it with interest, moved by its true story of a young person who never let the challenges he faced defeat him. It reminded me of Meshack Asare's Sosu's Call, an award-winning Ghanaian picture-book about a fictional boy who, like Emmanuel, had physical disabilities, but who triumphed, showing the people of his village what he could do. Laurie Ann Thompson's narrative here is engaging, and there is an author's note at the rear, giving more information about Emmanuel. The accompanying artwork from Sean Qualls, done in mixed media, is colorful and expressive. Recommended to picture-book readers looking for inspiring true stories of young people overcoming great difficulties.

Emmanuel was born with one leg but never let that dictate how his life would go and he grows up to bike his way across 400 miles. This is a beautiful story about Emmanuel and how his mother forced him to be independent even as a baby and how that shaped him into the determined young men he ended up being. Emmanuel's story is inspiring and everything he accomplished he did on his own despite the doubts of everyone from his own father all the way to strangers in the city. I would recommend this book from pre-k to 2nd grade.

Emmanuel's Dream is an inspirational story of a boy who overcomes his physical challenges. Emmanuel won't let his disability get in the way, he goes to school, works hard for his family, and sets out on a 400 mile bike ride to inspire others with disabilities. Children may get frustrated when they have a physical limitation, but it's important for them to know that no matter what, they can achieve great things.

The inspiring true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. From Ghana, West Africa, Emmanuel was born in 1977 with a deformed leg. His father left after he was born: most people in his village believed that Emmanuel would be useless or even a curse. Luckily for Emmanuel, his mother believed in him. She taught him to be self-reliant. He found a way to attend school, his mother carrying him until he was too heavy, even through most children with disabilities stayed home. 15 year old Emmanuel took his dying mother's words to heart, took care of his family and didn't give up. His epic 400 mile bike ride in Ghana brought attention to the ability of disabled people, and spurred on the Ghanaian government to pass the "Persons with Disabilities Act" of 2006. Emotive illustrations help to make this a book that can be used to inspire all and support children facing their own issues. Schneider Family Book Award winner.

Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah is famous for his athleticism. This book does a great job at showing children that those with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives and accomplish amazing things, just like their abled counterparts. I think this book is a great way to start a conversation with young children about life with a physical disability.

This story immediately took my heart and I would highly recommend this to people of all ages and all interests. Faced with the challenge of having one deformed leg, Emmanuel is faced with a very hard situation early in life. While being looked at differently by many people, his mother always believes in him. Starting with soccer, he then began a very respectable cyclist. Especially from an athlete’s perspective, this is truly heartwarming and shows that passion and love is greater than “weakness”. I would highly recommend this book.

Emmanuel was born in Ghana, West Africa as a healthy baby except only one of his legs worked. His mama was a wonderful woman who told him that he could have anything he wanted but he would have to get it for himself. She taught him that even though he was different he could do anything other people did he just might have to work a little harder. Where he lived kids with disabilities couldn't go to school but that didn't stop him, his mom would carry him and then when he got too big he hopped all the way to school. He made friends by sharing his ball and then his new friends helped him learn to ride a bike. His mother got sick so he found work, not begging, to help with money. He wanted to honor his mother by showing people that just because he was disabled didn't mean he was unable. He rode all around Ghana on his bike and spoke to many people along the way. This was a great book about someone with a disability. His mom knew he was different but pushed him to do the same things as people who weren't disabled. She always told him just because he was disabled doesn't mean he's unable.

From finding his way from poverty to being an insprational hero in his native Ghana for people with disabilities, the story of Emmanual Ofosu Yeboah, the one legged racer is a timeless inspirational piece for everyone. It flows nicely from his upbringing and being deemed cursed by those around him for being born with one leg, to leaving his parents and working hard to survive in a world where he alone would never give up, there is nothing short of awe inspiring to be able to read a story like this and then realize that this is true. Emmanuel went on to ride over 400 miles by bike and inspired many about overcoming all obstacles to any disability. As is read in the book, it is not our legs that stop us from greatness, but out minds.

An inspiring true story of Emmanual Ofosu Yeboah and his 400 plus mile ride. Emmanuel was born with one leg. His mother gave him inspiration and helped him with his inability but she told him that he’d have to do things himself. He hoped 2 miles to school, shined shoes for extra money, and later learned how to ride a bike. He rode his bike following his mother’s death to the the city of Accra, gaining notoriety and fame and spreading the message that “disability does not mean inability.”

There are many reasons as to why I thoroughly enjoyed this book. First, the illustrations are amazing. I think telling the story by looking at just the pictures can stand on its own when picking out this book. Second, this book pushes readers to think about the real world. The book also gives them a sense that they can achieve anything as long as they work hard and put their mind to it. Emmanuel was able to pursue his dream by striving for what he particularly wanted. I think readers 7-10 would enjoy this book because it can get them thinking on goals they would like to achieve no matter how big or small.

"Emmanuel's Dream" is the story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. He was born with only one foot but he accomplished his biggest dreams. I like this book because it shows that a person who has a disability is not helpless. In the book, it tells the reader how Emmanuel played soccer and hopped on one foot and climbed trees. Emmanuel even took care of his family when his mother became ill. I really like how the book shows Emmanuel as independent and strong. His disability did not define him, it only made him stronger and I think that the book really captures that.
