Lafayette Fresco Thompson

Much of this book's just stories from Fresco Thompson's career as ballplayer, minor league manager, and Dodger's minor league coordinator/VP/whatever. Those are fun.

Every now and then he turns into an old grouch, complaining about the younger generation. Those sections are not fun.

And there are sections about the business of baseball that I expected to find interesting. Some of it is; especially the parts about Walter O'Malley. The chapters about the Dodgers' move to LA are biased in ways I find annoying, but probably seemed justified to the author. But then there are discussions about how expensive things are--this in 1964!--and justifications for the low salaries minor league players have always made. I don't buy that part at all, and am annoyed enough to gig the rating a bit.… (más)
