However, she doesn't seem very certain about how to classify the various pieces. Many of the pieces could have been put into several categories, and there are no cross references.
It would often have been interesting to see details of a piece, but such details were not often available, and some that were printed were not much larger than in the larger picture. The pictures were often cropped in such a way as to leave off interesting details mentioned in the captions. Scale was often very hard to determine.
I started wondering who the 'Jane Davies' is after seeing piece after ugly piece by her. A note in the back explains that these are student samples by the author's daughter. While working such samples is a very useful exercise, publishing them in this form was a bad judgement call for both women. I would like to assume that she can design and carry out an interesting piece of needlework, but, if so, the proof is not shown here.
This could have been an exceptional book, but it wasn't.
