Fences Left Broken by Kristen Terrette is a Young Adult novel. Mia’s father died and now she finds out she had family she never knew. As she makes friends in Mississippi, she learns of secrets, murders, and more that have affected the two sides of her family and caused painful estrangement.

The author does an excellent job of developing the character and storylines. Even though the author moves around in time, the book captured my interest and kept me reading.

So, if you are looking for a Young Adult novel, check out Fences Left Broken by Kristen Terrette.

What an amazing story this is. The author does an absolute great job of bringing history to life. It’s funny how some people like to forget about the history of ancestors but some were able to break barriers of hatred and prejudice. I loved how detailed the book is. I had never heard of the Freedom of Summer and the families that were involved in it. What they did was bring freedom to people who never thought they were worthy.

I now see how the title is perfect for this story. Mia’s relatives tried at one time to mend fences with people but it became something that divided famines for generations. As Mia begins to get answers about her past, I felt like I was with her every step of the way. She has always known she wasn’t accepted by some relatives because she was bi- racial. Now she faces secrets, greed, and a history lesson that starts a long time ago. Can you imagine the hate that has festered all these years between two families? It is heartbreaking to read and I wanted to let Mia know that God loves and accepts her.

The book reminds us that we can make things better for those who come after us. It’s important to leave a legacy that inspires, gives hope and shows forgiveness. I loved the story and appreciate how the author weaved history with fiction to make this an unforgettable period in history.

Shame is a powerful tool of the devil. Makes you see things unclearly, and keeps you from being able to see God , because you are hiding from Him, embarrassed because of your situation oppression your sin.”

Whether you are old or young, this book contains a message you should read. I found the characters and plot to be engaging. Dealing with the topics of integration in the south, the author masterfully weaves together different generations to show what happens when step out in the way God would have us to go.

Centered on the idea of Grace trying to complete her senior project in order to graduate on time, the story traverses different time periods to convey the story. I found the author handled these transitions well. I found Grace’s story to be worth reading. Sometimes experiencing historical events through the context of a family member grabs our attention in a way that reading about them can not. See You Monday conveys that point. So check out this book for yourself.

This is a must read for everyone who wants to make a difference in the world. I was captivated by the story from beginning to end. It was easy to picture each event that happened as the author is gifted with words that flow gracefully across the pages. I liked reading about the 1960s and all the changes that made headlines. Remembering Martin Luther King Jr. brought make many feelings. Today we still find ourselves fighting for everyone to be treated equally. During the sixty’s there was a definite division in race. One woman stood up and made a difference at a field day that set the tone for this story.

Some called her crazy, but Johnnie knew that God wanted her to reach out to those who felt unwanted. I loved how brave she was to stand up against hatred and be God’s hands and feet as she took a stand against prejudice. Every character in this book came to life as Grace listened to Mimi retell of her childhood. I remember going to my granddad’s farm every summer. There was plenty to do but all I wanted to do was sit with my granddad and listen to him recount his life.

I could go on for days about how much this book touched me. I was reminded about being bullied and how even today that pain still lingers. One person can make a difference and this story emphasis how important it is to listen to God. The faith in this book was good and gives a great lesson in trusting Him. Out of everything I read, two things really stuck with me. Be the person who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. Don’t be on the sidelines watching injustice happen. God called us to love one another. The ending is perhaps the best part of the story for me. I cried as I read the last page and wondered how many people I ignored when they needed someone? Did I miss an opportunity to show someone that they mattered? I am forever changed by this story and will from this day forward not miss my chance to reach out and show love to everyone. I will not be afraid to stand up to bullies and I will at all times love unconditionally.

“God doesn’t want anyone to be alone, and I’m not going to disappoint him.”
