Younger readers version of Tapp Coutts memoir about growing up on an enormous cattle station in the NT outback in the 1970s. This provides a fascinating insight into how indigenous and non-indigenous cultures CAN work together and would be a great book to provoke discussion in an upper Primary /Lower secondary classroom particularly as it provides lots of information on how different mobs interact, their differing beliefs and cultures. Would have to set scene for younger readers as talks about tribal scars and naked women though.
Very good for readers from this closeted generation to imagine a world without OH&S - young kids riding tractors and horses and being left basically to run wild, play in the dirt and discover life without computers and with minimal contact to the outside world. (Katherine is seen as "the city")
Presented to Year 7s students by reading Chapter 4 "our new home" with a bit of censoring/edition.p.18 to "besides that shed". p.20 "When Mum askied.." to p. 21 "atmospheric reception.". P.22" There was no electricity to Katherine" p.23 "From a very young age I would [change to "identify the stars - not all the constellations she lists " to end of page 23.
Talked about imagining a world like this....book was borrowed instantly.
