This was my second time reading Making Independent Films: Advice from the Filmmakers, and it holds up considering how long ago I first picked it up.

There is one major flaw with this book, and that is the rather misleading title. This book is less a collection of advice from filmmakers (mostly first-timers) and more just a collection of stories from the making of their first (or second) independent feature films. A better title would certainly be "Tales from the Filmmakers."

The book is broken into each element of the filmmaking process (Coming up with an idea, writing, pre-production, production, post-production, editing, festivals and screenings, and a closing chapter on being a producer/director and where each filmmaker found themselves by the end of it all). It's well done, and the stories are well told and often informative; but the only real advice from this book comes from the Appendix.

Enjoyable collection of stories from first time filmmakers making their films, but don't expect any more out of it.… (más)
